Sock Monkey Hat- Adult size

So I have been crocheting these sock monkey hats and they seem to be well received. A friend of mine who crochets was interested in making one, and I have been wanting to experiment with actually writing out a pattern, so heres my chance. This is my first pattern that Ive written out, so if you try it and have questions or get stuck on something feel free to ask me and I will gladly give you all the help that I can. I ocasionally use patterns, but I usually just do what feels right or what looks good, so this should be interesting!! Good luck!

SC around
SC around
Break A and fasten B
SC around
Break B and Fasten C
SC around until you have a total of 35 rows from top to bottom ( if your head is smaller or larger, add or subtract rows)
Break C and tie off. Weave in ends

Ear flaps: make two
Chain 15
SC in second chain from hook and all the way across
SC2TOG, SC across, CH 1, turn
*Continue this pattern until you have 1 SC space left, SC in last space
SC all the way around the earflap, leave a long tail for sewing, You will end up with a tail at the bottom of your earflap, what I do is weave it through so the tail comes out of the end of the top and I then use the tail to attach the ear flap onto the hat
For the braids that come off of the earflaps I take six long pieces of yarn (approx. about twenty inches give or take) and pull them through the last sc space on the bottom of the earflap. I then braid them down until I get the desired length I want and tie them off (tightly) with a smaller piece of yarn of the same color. then trim the bottom so the fringe is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long.

Pom-Pom
Create a pom pom using whatever technique you prefer and attach to the top of the hat, the bigger the hat the bigger the pompom should be. I included a video if you need instructions on the pompom ...hopefully the link will take you there if not, just youtube how to make a pompom.

Mouth
with Color A
Ch 10
SC in second chain from hook and all the way across do not turn
working all the way around SC around
in last ch space 2SC
SC 2 in first SC
SC in next 8
2SC in next 2 spaces
SC in next 9 spaces
join, leave a long tail for sewing mouth onto hat

attach Red to middle of mouth and SC through middle for a mouth slit....I use 8 SC stitches Fasten off and weave in ends

Ears
Make two
Ch 2
4 SC in first Chain space
Ch 3
TRC in first SC
2 TRC in next 2 spaces
TRC in last space, chain 3, join to last SC space, leave long tail for sewing ears on

Assembly
Obviously you want to center all your pieces so it looks good on your head!
You will want to use a yarn darner to sew all pieces on the hat, except the eyes which you will use a regular needle and black thread.
Attach the earflaps about 7 inches apart in the front and about 6 inches apart in the back. I usually attach the earflaps first and center the mouth and eyes and ears according to the where the earflaps are.

Sew the monkey ears just below the red yarn on that goes across the upper part of the hat, and sew them a little further forward (if they are to far back they dont look right)

Like I said this is the first time ever I am writing a pattern out! And it is for a friend who wanted to make the hat. If you have any questions at all please please please feel free to post a comment and ask and I will help you to the best of my ability!!!

HAPPY CROCHETING!!

**The bottom of the earflaps are done differently in this picture as they are instructed in the pattern. People seem to prefer the braids

  4. I'm wanting to make this for a Christmas gift for my friends 1 year old. I'm new to crocheting, could you help me figure out how to adjust the pattern?

  5. sure...what you want to do is less increasing rounds on top. So if its for a one year old you would probably want to do 9 or 10. Then make the amount of just sc rows less. So instead of 35 rows of sc you may just want to do 15 or so. You may have to eyeball it, or you can look up measurements for different head sizes and go from there. Does that make sense??

    1. You know I never measured it, but its an average adult size. The hats stretch quite a bit so youve got some room. Next time I make one I will put the measurements on the post!

  11. I have a pattern here but it's only for sizes 0-3 months but I have someone wanting one for a 3 year old and a 7 year old with a big head How would I increase the pattern?

    1. You can find measurements for age according to head size online. When you start the pattern add or decrease the increasing rounds depending on the size you want. So if youre going for a three year old you probably want to increase until you get to 2 single crochet in the first and 10 single crochet after that. You also want to increase the number of rows you crochet.
If you measure you should be fine. You can always go up or down a hook size as well!
Hopefully that makes sense! Sorry it took so long to respond!!

  12. Hi Ruth! Thanks so much for posting this pattern. I adjusted your pattern for a one year old, used hdc instead of single crochet, added red to the inside of the ears, and used all three colors in the braids. It turned out very cute! Thanks again!

  13. I am working on mine now. I do have a question. I have done 17 rows out of the 35 and just wonder how long it will be. Are the ear flaps supposed to be exactly over the ears? Or maybe alittle lower? Would love to see it on an actual head!

  14. I like my hats to come right to my brow, so they are a little longer. If you want shorter just stop short a few rows. The ear flaps also come down just a little lower than the ear, but that is just my personal preference.
I wish I had one to take a pic of on, but they are all gone!
Hope it turns out for you!
